Activities of Daily Living / Functional Impact Assessments

Be amazed at what you can achieve with Occupational Therapy in promoting increased independence and well-being in everyday activities like self-care, leisure, work occupations or community participation.

Occupational therapy encompasses the treatment of injured, ill, or disabled patients through the therapeutic observation and use of everyday activities.

Those who specialise in occupational therapy help these patients develop, recover, improve and/or maintain the skills needed for daily living and working.

These include everyday activities such as self-care, personal hygiene and simple household chores.

As our growing population also enjoys a longer life expectancy than in generations prior, the need for occupational therapy and continued assessment has grown as well.

Occupational therapists are often called upon to work with patients after an accident, major surgery (particularly after neurological, spinal or any procedure that directly affects mobility), stroke or other illness and in any situation where the ability to care for oneself, one's surroundings and/or function in the workplace has been compromised to any degree.

As an occupational therapist, Jean specialises in the assessment of the day-to-day functioning of an individual, including, but not limited to, self-care/personal hygiene, management of regular and customary household tasks, leisure activities and hobbies.

An activities of daily living (ADL) assessment analyses an individual's functional performance in the areas of personal, self-care, domestic and general home maintenance activities in and around the home.

An Occupational Therapist (OT) determines:

  • whether task performance can be modified and if so, is able to recommend task modification education

  • whether an individual requires any equipment to increase their independence and the length of time this would be required for.

  • whether any care assistance is required for a specific period of time (e.g. following surgery), and provides specific recommendations.  The assistance may include: domestic assistance, attendant care assistance, gardening/ home maintenance assistance, etc.

  • whether home modifications are required.

This assessment can be performed under CTP, NDIS, WorkCover schemes, TPD, Lifetime care and support,  medico-legal and Comcare.

Recommendations made are always the option that provides the highest level of independence, with equipment and modifications being recommended only if necessary.
